History[]
The genesis of Garry's Mod can be traced back to its roots as a source mod for Half-Life 2. Initially conceived as a platform for experimenting with the game's mechanics and assets, Garry's Mod quickly garnered attention for its sandbox-style gameplay and open-ended design. As word of mouth spread and interest in the mod grew, it became apparent that Garry's Mod had the potential to evolve beyond its humble beginnings.
In time, Garry's Mod transcended its status as a mere mod and emerged as a standalone game in its own right. Valve Corporation, recognizing the popularity of the mod, facilitated its distribution on their digital storefront, Steam, where it became available for purchase at a modest price point of US$10.[1] This transition marked a significant milestone in the evolution of Garry's Mod, as it gained greater visibility and accessibility among gamers worldwide.
Workshop[]
One of the defining features of Garry's Mod is its Workshop functionality, which serves as a centralized hub for user-generated content. The Workshop allows players to submit and share a wide variety of assets, including models, props, maps, and more.
Within the Workshop, players can explore thousands of addons, ranging from recreations of popular characters, pop culture, to original content.
Some notable addons are weapons, such as the M9K Weapons, GBombs and Trouble in Terrorist Town and vehicles. SCars originally innovated on the Vehicles of GMod, featuring full customization on the vehicles themselves. TDMCars would also lead the way, for ported models from various games.
Another feature was the ability to add scripts, like VCmod, a lighting script for various vehicles across the workshop. These scripts were mostly on Coderhire until it went defunct and script sellers had to move another site, Script Fodder. You can currently find the GMod scripts there. The current version of Garry's Mod is version 13 (GMod 13), which still receives regular updates via Steam. An older, unsupported version, 9.0.4, is available as a free download at download.com among other places. It requires at least one Source Engine game in the user's account to play and therefore is offered in a reduced-price bundle with Counter-Strike: Source for those who do not meet that criteria.
Gameplay[]
Garry's Mod offers a sandbox-style gameplay experience that allows players to do whatever they desire. With a suite of tools and utilities, including the Physics Gun and Tool Gun, players can manipulate objects, NPCs, and environments in a multiple of ways.
The Physics Gun allows for the manipulation of objects with realistic physics, enabling players to lift, rotate, and stack items with ease. Meanwhile, the Tool Gun serves as a versatile tool for creating and modifying objects, with features such as welding, scaling, and material manipulation.
In addition to its sandbox gameplay, Garry's Mod also offers a wide range of game modes and activities for players to enjoy.
