Garry Newman (Born May 20, 1982 [1] in England) is the creator of Garry's Mod and owner of Facepunch Studios. He created Garry's Mod in 2004 and has a total of 338 hours in-game. He has retired entirely from playing Garry's Mod, opting instead to play Facepunch's other popular game, Rust, thus making the achievement "Yes, I am the real Garry!" impossible to obtain legitimately.
Garry has worked on other games, such as Rust, Clatter and Chippy.
Garry Newman's current project is a new sandbox game called "S&Box", which is designed as a sequel to Garry's Mod being developed on Valve's Source 2 game engine, the same engine that Half-Life: Alyx [2] runs on. Garry Newman applied for a job at Valve at some point before Garry's Mod went on sale. Garry had a phone interview, but did not continue with any more interviews because Valve was no longer interested.[3] Garry Newman has not personally worked on a Garry's Mod update in years and stopped playing.[3]
History[]
Garry Newman is a British game developer best known for creating the popular sandbox game Garry's Mod (GMod) and the survival game Rust. He is the founder and lead developer of the game development studio Facepunch Studios.
Newman first gained notoriety with the release of GMod in 2004. The game, based on the Source engine, allows players to manipulate objects and experiment with physics. It quickly gained a dedicated following and became one of the most popular games on Steam. The success of GMod allowed Newman to establish Facepunch Studios and start work on other projects.
In 2013, Newman and his team released Rust, a multiplayer survival game where players must gather resources, build shelter and fend off wild animals and other players. The game was met with positive reviews and has since become one of the most popular survival games on Steam.
Newman is known for his hands-on approach to game development and is heavily involved in the development of all of Facepunch Studios' games. He is also known for his outspoken and controversial views on the gaming industry, regularly making statements on social media and in interviews, such as:
"Sup Twitter, I just shat myself and now I'm taking my pants to the shower to wash them, hope you're having a nice morning too"
and
"fuck these sidewards knives"
Newman has also criticized Unity for their idea of the developers paying money each time Rust is installed.[4] Newman believes many copyright takedowns on the Garry's Mod Workshop are from MarkMonitor, a subcontractor for Nintendo.[5]
In addition to game development, Newman also runs a blog where he writes about game development and the game industry. He is also a supporter of open-source software, and his games have been built using mostly open-source tools and frameworks.
Overall, Garry Newman has made a significant impact on the gaming industry with his creation of GMod and Rust, and he continues to be a prominent figure in the game development community. His hands-on approach to game development and his controversial views make him a unique and recognizable figure in the gaming industry.
